Comprehension Skill Packs: Informational Text

Provide students with direct and explicit instruction on key comprehension skills using informational texts. Each skill pack includes a variety of passages and a lesson plan that follows a gradual release model, supporting students as they build meaning from the texts. Refer to the Lesson Plan for each pack for additional ideas, including extended activities and application in writing.

Instructional Tips

  • Target comprehension skills: Introduce each pack’s comprehension skill by modeling with projectable passages and tools.
  • Provide opportunities for repeated practice: Use Practice and Independent Passages to develop automatic, strategic, adaptable reading skills that help build meaning from text.
  • Track student progress: Assign Practice Passages and Independent Practice Passages digitally and then refer to the Activity and Skill Reports.
