The executive branch is led by the president. The president appoints the heads of the cabinet, and their agencies carry out the laws written by Congress. Along with the two other branches of the federal government, the executive branch helps ensure a balance of power in the United States. However, the president's powers tend to change over time—along with the ways in which we read and interpret the Constitution.
