Close Reading Packs Tips
Close Reading Packs promote careful analysis of text while building the 21st Century skills of critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Students contemplate a Key Question as they read engaging passages on a common topic, and then participate in small-group and whole-class discussions. All students read a Connecting Passage to apply knowledge gained from reading closely and discussing the passages.
Why Use Close Reading Packs
Self-directed individual work, team-oriented small-group work, and teacher-facilitated, whole-class discussion helps students analyze and evaluate literary and informational text, with the goal of determining the best answer to a text-dependent Key Question.
How to Use Close Reading Packs
Each pack contains Teaching Tips that address important Common Core skills, such as comprehension, author's craft, and critical thinking. The Teaching Tips also provide teachers with pointers for serving as discussion facilitators as they help students reach consensus on their answer to the Key Question.
- Provide four Student Passages for individual and group work with engaging, cross-curricular topics for close reading.
- Use one applied learning passage for a culminating activity.

- Engage students with a two-page form to record evidence needed to answer a text-dependent Key Question
- Support your instruction by setting a purpose for note-taking and re-reading skills and strategies that help students answer Key Questions and meet Common Core State Standards.
