Cathy Freeman is one of the greatest runners in Australian history. She is descended from the Kuku Yalanji people of Far North Queensland through her mother and the Burri Gubba people of Central Queensland through her father. She was the first Aboriginal person to win an individual Olympic gold medal. At the height of her running career, she repeatedly put her athletic achievements on the line in support of Aboriginal peoples. Her efforts helped spark an important national reckoning regarding the rights and treatment of First Peoples in Australia.
