Classic (fiction), 2,878 words, Level Y (Grade 5), Multi-Part Classics, Lexile 860L
Alice is confronted with a confusing circular path, which leads her into a conversation with some very rude flowers who criticize her appearance. Then, she meets the Red Queen, who takes her farther into what appears to be a chessboard world where, no matter how fast they run, they can't seem to get anywhere. The Red Queen seems to vanish into thin air, and Alice comes to the conclusion that she, herself, is a pawn in the Looking-Glass world, and it is time for her to move on, as she wants to become a queen.
