In the first part of this adaptation of a classic Sherlock Holmes mystery, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet a new client, Helen Stoner. Helen provides the detectives with her family history, including that of her violent stepfather, Dr. Roylott. She and her twin sister, Julia, had been living with Dr. Roylott at his estate when Julia abruptly died, shortly before she was to be married. Helen then recounts the events leading up to Julia's tragic death. In the moments before Julia died, she cried out about a mysterious "speckled band".
