Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson meet a new client, Helen Stoner. Helen provides the detectives with her family history, including that of her violent stepfather, Dr. Roylott. Helen then recounts the events leading up to Julia's tragic death. In the moments before Julia died, she cried out about a mysterious "speckled band".
