The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County is a story-within-a-story told to a reluctant listener by a garrulous old California miner. The miner talks his ear off about a man so in love with gambling that he will bet on anything, but his favorite thing to bet on is his talented frog. The frog wins any jumping contest--until a trickster arrives, finds a way to defeat the frog, and walks away with the gambler's money and his pride. How does the trickster do it? And will the miner's less-than-enthusiastic listener ever escape his talkative captor?
