Despereaux, a tiny mouse with big dreams, is already an outsider in his mouse community, and when he falls in love with the princess of Dor, he is exiled from his home. Princess Pea, whom Despereaux loves, is still grieving the death of her mother from an accident triggered by a rat. Roscuro, the rat, desires to live in a world filled with light but has turned bitter by the light dwellers' reactions to him. He decides to use Miggery Sow, the scullery maid, to enact his plan of revenge. Mig, the maid, is an unintelligent girl who was sold by her father and who has lived a hard life, always holding on to her secret wish to be a princess. This modern-day fairy tale alternates between their four points of view before weaving their stories together in a thrilling conclusion that changes lives and brings a surprising happy ending.
