Sara takes a secret interest in Mr. Carrisford, the Indian gentleman who has moved in next door. She sees that he is deeply troubled but has no idea why. In fact, Mr. Carrisford is Captain Crewe's former business partner in the diamond mines. He promised her father that his daughter would be cared for, but contracted a brain fever, making it seem that he'd abandoned Crewe and his daughter. Wracked with guilt, he has enlisted his lawyer to help him locate the girl.
