As Sara's desolation continues, her sympathetic curiosity remains one of her few comforts. She likes to watch a nearby family, large and happy, enjoying life behind the windows of their cozy home. One Christmas, she bumps into a young boy in the family, who pities her and gives her sixpence. Sara is ashamed to take it, and her polite, unusual response to charity arouses the curiosity of the boy's older sisters. Sara is also curious when a sickly gentleman moves into the house next door to the seminary. Because of his unusual belongings, Sara dubs him "the Indian gentleman."
