Sara makes her first friend at the Select Seminary, the earnest but struggling Ermengarde. Ermengarde is the object of much ridicule from both her classmates and Miss Minchin, who regard her as the class dunce. Sara, however, befriends Ermengarde and invites her to her rooms. Ermengarde is awed by Sara's love of books and her ability to speak French and make up all kinds of fanciful stories. The two agree to become best friends.
