The approach of the fall migration has animals all along the riverbank preparing to leave for the winter. The field mice are too busy to entertain the idea of a picnic with Rat, and the swallows are looking forward to a change of scene in warmer climes. Rat, who stays put all winter, is annoyed and made restless by all these changes. He goes off to think and meets a seafaring rat. The sea rat begins to tell his story, and Rat wonders what sort of life he might have beyond the borders of his chosen world.
