Badger welcomes Rat and Mole to his home. After supper, Rat tells Badger about Toad's obsession with motorcars. Mole and Rat spend the night, and the next morning they enjoy breakfast with some of Badger's other guests. Badger gives Mole a tour of his many rooms, which were once part of a human city. Mole feels right at home in Badger's underground mansion, but Rat is restless and anxious to get back to the river. Otter arrives, looking for Rat and Mole, and they make their way back to Rat's home.
