Summer is over, and Mole decides to explore the Wild Wood and find Badger. Mole is thoroughly frightened by the Wild Wood. When Rat realizes that Mole is gone, he gets his pistols and other weapons, then bravely enters the Wild Wood after him. Rat finds Mole hiding inside a tree. It is late, and Mole insists on taking a nap. When he wakes, it is snowing hard, which makes it difficult to find their way. They get more and more lost until they stumble upon the front door to Badger's underground home.
