Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his late business partner, Jacob Marley. Marley, in chains, warns Scrooge against valuing material goods and business over the welfare of his fellow man. Marley tells Scrooge that he will be visited by three spirits who may help him avoid a similarly fettered fate-if he is willing to listen. Marley vanishes, leaving Scrooge to gaze out the window at a scene filled with many miserable ghosts in chains before falling asleep.
