In How Many Squares? the basic concept of the area of a rectangle is taught by partitioning a rectangle into rows and columns of equal squares and then counting to find the total number of squares. Simple repetitive phrases and images in the book provide support for students to begin to construct the idea of area. Students will eventually measure square units to find the area of rectangles, and this book allows them to develop an understanding of the idea of area using equal parts. (Use repeated addition to find the area of a quilt by counting the rows and columns.)
