In the 1880s white settlers realized that Native lands in what is now Oklahoma were good for farming and ranching. As a result, the United States government forced many Native peoples from their land and onto reservations, which opened millions of acres of Native land to settlers. On April 22, 1889, thousands of settlers lined up along the border of the open land and raced to stake their claim. The Great Land Run is a historical fiction text that introduces students to an event that shaped U.S. history.
