Emily Carr is one of Canada's most famous and celebrated artists. Even as a young child, she loved making art. To become an artist, Carr had to overcome many obstacles, among them the idea in her town that being a professional artist was not a choice for women. Carr also struggled to develop her own artistic style, which she finally found while painting landscapes in France. Carr spent a lot of time with First Peoples in Canada and Alaska, and much of her art shows her love of these people, their cultures, and the natural environment of the West. Throughout her journey to become a successful artist, Carr's contrary nature helped her push through the barriers that stood in her way.
