I Named Her Rapunzel

Close Read Passage, 507 words, Fairy Tale (fiction), Level Z1 (Grade 6), Lexile 990L

In the traditional fairy tale Rapunzel, the witch is the villain. But what about the parents who bargained away their only child? This first-person account from the witch's point of view is a sympathetic portrait of a woman with deep, maternal love for the child she raised. Perhaps Rapunzel's true mother is not the one that birthed her, but the one that wanted to protect her.
