Rat and Mole search for Otter's missing son, Portly. As they travel by boat, Rat hears mysterious and beautiful music. They come to an island where they find the god Pan playing and Portly, safe and sound, asleep between Pan's hooves. When the sun's first rays hit their eyes, the vision of Pan vanishes. Portly wakes up happy, but then he starts to cry, missing the comfort he felt at Pan's feet. Rat and Mole return Portly to his father. They forget what they've seen, but they are left with a sense of mystery and wonder.
