Historical (fiction), Trade Book
Annabelle is a girl growing up in a small Pennsylvania town sometime after the end of World War II. Her world is rocked when Betty Glengarry moves to town-a new student who proves to be a mean, manipulative bully. As the story proceeds, Betty's aggressions escalate, and one of her targets becomes Toby, a reclusive World War I veteran. While Betty bends all of her dark powers to making the town view Toby as a monster, Annabelle does her best to vindicate the man she has befriended. Events come to a terrible crisis, and while the ending is not particularly a happy one, it does leave Annabelle with an experience that will inform the rest of her life. Her tale will help readers grapple with ideas of justice and injustice, kindness and cruelty, and how they can respond to a challenging world.
