A community of mice live in a wall outside of an abandoned farmhouse. Most of the mice are busy working day and night to store up food for the winter. But one mouse, Frederick, does not join the others. He sits in the field, soaking up the sun, collecting the colors, and gathering words. The other mice don't understand Frederick and are bothered by his lack of work. However, in the middle of the winter, when the food has run low and the cold days linger, the mice are grateful for Frederick's words as he recreates for them the sunny, colorful feelings of summer.
