In this novel's post-apocalyptic future, the world is starkly divided between the haves and have-nots. The country of Panem is made up of twelve districts that surround the wealthy Capitol. Every year the Capitol hosts a competition called the Hunger Games, a gory battle between children from each district who are forced to fight to the death-a grisly reminder of the Capitol's power and punishment as well as the districts' failed uprising. Participants are chosen by a lottery. Katniss, a tough survivor from District 12, volunteers herself after her sister is chosen by the lottery. Now Katniss must muster all her survival skills and learn how to navigate the political minefield of Panem if she has any hope of living to become the victor.
