Historical (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 1000
The Watsons are a fairly normal family living in Flint, Michigan. Kenny, the narrator, is in fourth grade and is kind but a little reserved. His older brother, Byron, is in sixth grade and is popular and rebellious, and his little sister, Joetta, is the baby of the family, barely in kindergarten. As Byron's disobedience reaches new heights, his parents decide that they have had enough, and they take a family trip to visit Grandma in Birmingham. Life in Alabama is a shock to the Watson children, and as they adjust to a city that confronts them with more racism and injustice than they are used to, the characters undergo changes that will affect their relationships and futures.
