A Victorian inventor known only as the Time Traveler builds a time machine and travels eight hundred thousand years into the future. There, he meets Weena, a member of the Eloi race. Through Weena, he begins to understand the mutualistic relationship between her people and the subterranean Morlocks, who have stolen his time machine and trapped him in time. Eventually, the Time Traveler escapes, traveling millions of years into the future and witnessing the beginning of the death of the sun and the ruin of the earth. The Traveler returns to his own time but soon after leaves again, never to return.
