Historical (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 970
In pre-Civil War New Orleans, thirteen-year-old Jessie plays his fife by the docks to earn extra money for his family. One day, he is kidnapped and pressed into service on the Moonlight, a slave ship bound for Africa. The voyage is horrendous, but nothing compared to the horrors he sees once the slaves are onboard and he is forced to play music for them. On the journey back to America, Jessie escapes the Moonlight with a slave boy names Ras. As Jessie grows to adulthood, even fighting for the Union during the Civil War, he continues to remember his experience as a slave dancer.
