This is the tale of Oliver Twist, a poor orphan who spends his young life in dire straits. Growing up in a bleak home for boys and then in an abusive workhouse, he finally escapes and is adopted by a street gang led by the unscrupulous Fagin. Eventually Oliver meets Mr. Brownlow, who becomes his benefactor. Brownlow is able to untangle the mystery of Oliver's parentage, making it possible for him to claim his inheritance and take his rightful place in society.
