Wonderstruck
Historical (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 830
The story opens with Ben, the narrator, a boy born deaf who has never known his dad. A tragic accident causes him to run away to New York City, where he hopes to discover clues to his father's identify. The story then switches to Rose, a deaf girl who was born fifty years before Ben. She also runs away to New York City, but her goal is to find her actress idol. Although Ben's and Rose's journeys are a generation apart, their stories are nonetheless entwined and will fully come together in the novel's conclusion. This story is equally driven by words and illustrations, creating a lovely work that is a hybrid between a novel and an art book.
