Unlucky Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, a place for juvenile delinquents, for a crime he didn't commit. There he experiences a cruel warden and the backbreaking daily work of digging holes in an arid, barren landscape. The mysterious warden claims the work is character-building, but it's obvious to the boys that she's searching for something. Stanley and his friend Zero eventually must figure it all out, even if they almost die trying.
