Mafatu is fearful of the sea because it took his mother when he was a baby. In a village of fierce seafaring Polynesian people, this trait is not accepted, especially for the son of the village chief. One evening, after again being mocked for his fears, Mafatu reaches his breaking point and sets out on the open ocean with only his dog as company. He must survive many perils, from storms to sharks to cannibals, in order to overcome his fear of the ocean and return to his people as an equal.
