The Giving Tree

Poetry (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 530

A little boy loves to play with the leaves, climb the trunk, and swing on the branches of an apple tree. This makes the tree very happy. But as times passes and the boy grows, his interest in the tree wanes, and he only returns to take from her. First, he takes her apples to sell for money, then her branches to build a house, and finally her trunk to build a boat. When the boy, now a tired old man, returns, only a stump remains, but the tree offers it to him as a place to rest.
