Poetry (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 560
A young boy visits the desolate part of town to learn what happened to the Lorax who once lived there. The Once-ler shares his cautionary tale of how his greed caused a catastrophic environmental chain reaction that destroyed the Truffula tree forest and drove away all the animals that depended on it. Once the town had become barren and polluted, the sad Lorax, spokesperson for the Truffula trees, left as well, leaving only a mysterious message… "unless." The remorseful Once-ler, understanding the Lorax's message, gives the boy the last Truffula seed and encourages him to grow a forest.
