Set in Connecticut in 1687, this novel chronicles a year in the life of sixteen-year-old Katherine "Kit" Tyler. Kit arrives from Barbados to live with her only remaining relatives, who are Puritans. Nothing in Kit's pampered life has prepared her for the harsh conditions she finds living with her aunt's family. Kit likes to visit an old Quaker woman named Hannah Tupper, who lives alone as an outcast. When a mob comes for Hannah to avenge a sickness they blame on her witchcraft, Kit acts quickly and saves her friend's life. Instead of escaping with Hannah, Kit stays to care for her sick cousin and is put on trial as a witch in Hannah's place. Kit is saved by the testimony of a young girl she helped, and the story ends with Kit preparing to sail back to Barbados with the young man she plans to marry.
