Historical (fiction), Trade Book, Lexile 970
Set around the turn of the twentieth century, this book follows Anne Shirley, an orphan who is mistakenly sent to live with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert on their farm on Prince Edward Island. Marilla and Matthew had wanted to adopt a boy to help with chores, but were sent Anne instead. Anne is a kind, thoughtful girl with a wild imagination, which she indulges in creative play and long, rambling discourses. Matthew takes an immediate liking to her, but Marilla is more reticent, and she is determined to have Anne follow the rules of social conduct in their rural Canadian town. Prone to making mistakes and speaking her mind, Anne rarely makes a good first impression, but her lovable nature eventually charms even her harshest critics.
