Buck ranges off on his own for an extended period to hunt a huge bull moose. While he is away, Yeehat Indians raid the camp, killing all the dogs and men, including John Thornton. In a fury, Buck attacks the Indians, killing many and driving off the rest. With John Thornton dead, Buck's last tie to civilization is broken. He follows the call of the wild to become the leader of a wolf pack, eventually becoming a legendary figure in the wilds of the north.
