Before the Pony Express, it could take over a month for mail to get from coast to coast. Three businessmen came up with the idea of the Pony Express-a relay mail system in which horseback riders would hand off mail pouches to other riders at regular stations along the way. Johnny Fry was the first rider to race towards the West, leaving St. Joseph, Missouri, on April 3, 1860. For the next ten days, riders handed off the mail pouch to other riders, with the last rider arriving in Sacramento, California, on April 13th.
