Mary Lennox, a selfish and sour child, is orphaned in India and sent back to England to live in her uncle's huge and mysterious house. The house has dozens of closed rooms, a locked garden, and strange sounds of crying can be heard. Gradually, Mary begins to change, and when she finds the key to the locked garden, she turns it into her secret place. Mary also investigates the crying sounds and discovers her cousin Colin, an invalid whose temper tantrums make him almost impossible to control. Mary and her new friends bring the secret garden back to life and Colin becomes tall, healthy, and strong.
