Milo is bored. Then a mysterious tollbooth appears in his room. Milo drives through the tollbooth and enters an unknown land next to the Sea of Knowledge. He meets Tock, a faithful watchdog who helps him think his way out of the Doldrums. Tock and Milo make their way to Dictionopolis. There they learn of two princesses, Rhyme and Reason, whose banishment is causing trouble throughout the land. After many adventures, Tock, Milo and their insect friend, Humbug, rescue the princesses. Milo goes back home through the tollbooth. Now that he's learned to think for himself, he discovers that his own room is full of adventures in knowledge.
