Meet a Reading A-Z Author: Kira Freed
"I honestly could write about animals for the rest of my life and never get tired of it."

Kira's Experience: Kira Freed's inspiration to write is a love of the natural world and a desire to share this fascination with children. The first book Kira wrote about the wonders of nature was Sea Turtles (Level R), and she has since written more than 60 books for Reading A–Z in science, social studies, art, and math. She has also written for other Learning A–Z websites and other educational publishers, including Benchmark Education and Wright Group, as well as for magazines and blogs in her role as a life coach.

Kira's Education: Kira holds graduate degrees in anthropology (University of Colorado-Boulder) and counseling psychology (California Institute of Integral Studies). She studied prehistoric and modern animals while working as an archaeologist and has volunteered at the Alaska SeaLife Center. She is also a certified life coach and wellness coach.

Kira's Author Packet: Have students read an article about Kira and explore a list of Kira's books. Use the comprehension questions and graphic organizers to see what students have learned about Kira and what she writes.

Resource Integration

A video interview with Kira, available at subscription website Writing A-Z, helps teach kids to compose their own interviews as an extension to the interview genre writing lesson. In fact, a low-cost Writing A-Z license provides leveled writing lessons in multiple genres and skill areas, so all students can write like the pros.

Build custom, weeklong lessons on the low-cost subscription website to match specific classroom instruction and subjects. Use glossary terms from Kira's books in your lessons using the Pre-Made Lesson Plans.

Children love to stop, look, listen, and read with subscription-website Raz-Kids' animated talking versions of favorite Reading A-Z books, like Kira's Bites and Stings (Level S).

Many students need extra one-on-one help to be successful readers. Reading-Tutors offers skill-specific tutor packs such as the fluency and comprehension lesson for Discovering Dinosaurs (Level I), based on the book by Kira.

Science A-Z also features a number of materials by Kira, including life science resources such as the Habitats/Environment (Gr. 3-4) nonfiction books and quick reads and The Human Body (Gr. 3-4) nonfiction books and quick reads, and earth science resources such as the Clouds, Wind and Storms (Gr. 3-4) nonfiction books and quick reads and the Weather (K-2) nonfiction books and quick reads.
