Background

The diphthong /oi/ letter combinations oi and oy are rather reliable in terms of pronunciation. They make the /oi/ sound as in boil and oyster. The /oi/ sound is reliably spelled in these two ways, so in this case, exceptions do not need to be taught. Both oi and oy are fairly easy for children to recognize in words at this level.
