Background

Long /o/ digraphs are a little more reliable than other digraphs in terms of pronunciation. The oa, oe, and ow digraphs make the long /o/ vowel sound. The long /o/ digraph can appear in initial, final, and medial positions in words. Another common spelling for the long /o/ vowel sound is the VCe pattern, as in note.
