Background

The letter v is a reliable letter in terms of the sound it makes. The letter v only makes the /v/ sound, as in the words vice and van. The /v/ sound also appears in the final position in VCe words such as five, and in the middle position in words such as never and even. There are other letters and combinations of letters that make the /v/ sound. The most common is the letter f in of and the ph in the name Stephen.
