Materials
Lesson plan and
teaching materials

To view the teaching materials, click on "Lesson plan and teaching materials." Then scroll to the end of the lesson to find the following materials:

  • Aa sound/symbol card
  • Aa picture cards
  • Phonemic awareness worksheet
  • Phonics worksheet

Please note that the lesson plans for consonant N and short vowel /a/ do not have accompanying decodable books. Children need to learn the elements N, short /a/, and P before having the necessary tools to read the first decodable book, Nan and Pap. This book is available with the third lesson plan.
Background

The vowel sound heard in cat is the short /a/ vowel sound. The most common spelling is a. There are, however, other spellings of the short /a/ vowel sound. These include ai in plaid, au in laugh and aunt, al in calf and half, and a-e in have.
