Lesson Plans for SPEED level R

During Reading

Model Reading
Provide a copy of the book to each child. Direct them to read silently or quietly to themselves. Tell those that finish before others to reread the book or to think about what they have read in order to respond to the purpose you set before the reading.

Setting the Purpose
Before having children read. Give them each a piece of paper and have them make a T-chart to record their findings as they read. (A T-chart is a two column chart with the a heading above either column.) Say: When looking at this book and the different things they are talking about, many of them seem to change over time. Ask: What headings can we put at the top of this T-chart to represent the difference in time as we compare and contrast these various things?

Have children label the first column past, and the second, present. As a group, read the first page together and have children write these two words at the top of each column on their T-chart. Inform them that as they are reading the book, they will need to write how the various things in the book were in the past as opposed to how they are now in the present.
