Compare and Contrast
This book provides a wonderful opportunity to compare how various modes of transportation used to be in contrast to how they are today. If the book is consumable, you can have children underline the information that tells them how the various modes of transportation have changed. You can have them fill in their
T-charts as they are reading, or have them go back and fill it in later. By filling it in at the time of reading, they will have an opportunity to take a rest from reading and focus on writing for a moment. However, for any children that have difficulty going from one task to another, this may make the reading more difficult. You will have to make this decision according to the group you are working with and what you feel is appropriate. The other consideration is, that by going back and filling in the T-charts later, they will be using their skimming and scanning skills, which require practice and work to improve.
