Word Skills
Review compound words with children. Write the following words on the board: anything, teacup, bedside, underground, weekend, somewhere, whatever.
Ask: Who can tell me the name of these types of words? What is needed to make a compound word?
Have children read the words and then say what the two separate words are in each compound word. Then discuss how knowing the meaning of each word helps with the meaning of the compound word. Have children search through Mermaid in a Teacup for other compound words. Have them list these words and write definitions alongside them.

Phonics
Review vowel digraphs ea, eo, ow, ai, ay, ee, oa. Have children tell you how they pronounce words or syllables when they see these vowel combinations. Have them work in pairs to search through Mermaid in a Teacup to find words with these vowel combinations. Have them list them under the vowel digraph on the Worksheet. For example:

ea eo ei ai ow ee
real people ceiling mermaid growing three

When children have completed the Worksheet, ask them to read the words. Then discuss with them any words they may have listed that are exceptions to the rule—for example, said, heard. Explain to children why these are exceptions (said is a high frequency word, and in heard, the r controls the vowel sound).

Grammar
Discuss nouns with children.
Ask and say: Who can give me a word that is a noun? How would you define the word noun? Turn to page 3 and share with the person next to you the nouns you can see. Hattie and mermaid are both nouns, but what is the difference? What sort of noun is the word Hattie? Who can find other examples of proper nouns on page 4?
