Lets make a web of some of the headings to organize your thoughts. Draw a web on the board with a space for the characters name in the center. Write the first heading Physical Characteristics for children. Have them supply other headings. When you are satisfied that they have given you a comprehensive set of headings, have them plan a web for the character of their choice. Say: Now I want you to choose a character and complete a web for that character. When you have completed the web, use that information to write a description. Social Studies Connection Reread pages 21 and 22 of Mermaid in a Teacup to children. Discuss with them the implications of teasing other students. Use a chart to list their responses. Have children discuss how someone who is teased might feel. As a group, devise a set of coping strategies that people who are being teased can use to deal with the situation. Reading Independently Invite children to reread the book, Mermaid in a Teacup, independently or with a partner. They could then look for and read other books written in diary form or books about groups of children having experiences similar to Hattie and her friends. Go to "Mermaid in a Teacup" main page |
