Lesson Plans for MERMAID IN A TEACUP level Q

During Reading

Say: Read to the end of page 4 and then be prepared to discuss what extra information you now have about the relationships among the characters. Support what you say with examples from the text.
Have children read to the end of page 12 and then discuss the setting with them.
Ask: Where and when is this story taking place? If you were painting a picture of the setting, what would you have in your picture?
Have children make a prediction about how they think the plot will unfold.
Ask: Have you read anything yet that has caused you to change your initial prediction about what will happen? If so, what is it?
Have children comment on anything further they have learned about the characters. Have them read the rest of the book independently. Have them mark with a sticky note any word or phrase they do not understand or cannot pronounce. You can clarify these later. During this time, you may choose to work with another group. Alternatively, you may wish to work individually with some children to monitor their oral reading and comprehension of parts of the text.
Say: I want you to finish reading the book at your own pace. As you read, remember to confirm or revise your predictions. I also want you to pay particular attention to the characters. When you have finished reading, we are going to discuss what we know about each of the characters. Pay attention not only to what they say and do, but also to what others say about them and what the author says about them.
