Lesson Plans for THE GOLDEN FLUTE level Q

Expand the Reading

Writing Connection
Poetry writing
Have children return to The Golden Flute and reread the verses.
Ask: What do you notice about these verses? Do they have anything in common?
Ensure that children respond that the verses provide a message and that each has a rhyme pattern, although this pattern differs from verse to verse.
Say: I want you to write another four-line verse that could conclude this folktale. Let’s first talk about the message that you may want in your verse. Share some ideas with the group.
Record children’s ideas on the board.
Say: Now let’s discuss the rhyme patterns that you may use. Check back through the verses again and then be prepared to discuss the rhyme patterns.
Write the rhyme patterns on the board and then have children work individually to write another verse.

Music Connection
Have children use the library and the Internet to further research flutes. Have them record and present their information on a large chart.

Reading Independently
Invite children to reread the book, The Golden Flute, independently or with a partner. They could then look for and read other folktales. Children should also read each other’s verses and Flute Charts.
