Lesson Plans for THE HOMEWORK LESSON Level P

Writing Connection
Individual Writing
Say: Ryan had a difficult time because he put off doing his homework until the last minute. I would like you to write about a time you put something off until the last minute. What happened? Did something bad happen, or did you get help? This could be done in a journal or as a formal writing lesson using the writing process of drafting, revising, editing, and final copy.

Math Connection
Managing time can be tricky. Have children develop calendars and daily schedules to help them list activities or tasks for which they are responsible. They can use these to maximize their time and to finish assignments without rushing. Schedules and calendars might also be posted in the room as whole-class reminders, or they might be sent home.

Reading Independently
Invite children to reread the book independently or with a partner. Have them share their own procrastination stories with each other.

Home Connection
Invite children to take the book home to read with their families, and to share their procrastination stories.

Assessment

  • Monitor children’s responses in the Comprehending the Text section to assess how well they understand the text or story.
  • Monitor reading to see if children are using effective reading strategies.
  • Assess children’s knowledge of sequencing.
